Blenheim House is a substantial detached Victorian property. The three-storey dwelling was built by Rotherham architect William Blackmoor in 1871. It was later home to Sir Charles Stoddart, who was mayor three times between 1886 and 1906.
By the late 1990s, it was being used as a pupil referral unit for the misbehaved, known as ‘Youth Action’, run by Rob and Lynne Packer. The unit closed in the early 2000s, after which Blenheim House was used as offices. The independent charity ‘Talking Newspaper’ occupied some ground floor rooms. The charity specialises in delivering Rotherham news for people who have a visual impairment, or who may find reading newspapers difficult due to age or disability. After they left Blenheim House for a new premises around 2008, the property remained empty and disused, and was quickly taken over by the homeless community. In April 2012, the house suffered a devastating arson attack. Attempts to auction or sell the property since have all been fruitless, and it remains a charred eyesore for local residents.
